Church School

Saint Anne's has a great church school program thanks to the dedicated volunteers who teach every Sunday from September to the end of May. At 10:00 Preschool and Kindergarten begin in the large playroom downstairs. Children in 1st grade and older begin in the Parish Hall for Children's Chapel before going downstairs for their classes. We begin chapel by ringing the church bell, then process with a crucifer and candle bearers, singing a favorite hymn. We have our own version of Prayers of the People where the children share their prayers and thanksgivings. They are eager to express the ways God has blessed their lives and always have people that they sincerely want to pray for. We read a prayer or psalm together, then read and discuss the Gospel lesson. After class, we join our families for communion and dismissal. During the summer we have a "one room" church school at the 10:00 service, where children watch a movie in the Dixon Lounge.

The children are encouraged to be a part of our Liturgy on the first Sunday of each month, Youth Sunday. Young adults and children serve as acolytes and read lessons. Our youth and children's choirs practice each week after the 10:00 service to sing during Holiday and Youth Sunday services. Our children are curious and interested in learning about Jesus and look forward to being together each week.

Church School Update - By Kathy Vera

I like to read the big white signs that churches have outside on their lawns. They often have clever or funny sayings on them…something to ponder while I’m sitting at a red light. Yesterday, I saw one that I thought was pretty good. It said: “God is more interested in your availability than your ability.”

The volunteers who gave their time at Vacation Bible School had not only ability but dedication and enthusiasm, and they made it a wonderful week for the children. Here were about 18 children and quite a few adults that spent almost 3 hours 5 nights in August at VBS. Not to mention the time spent in preparation. I want to thank Fr. Hastings, Pam Hastings, Ann Avallone, Jennifer and Mike Brennan, Betty Carleo, Jo Cataldi, Mary Duffy, Andi Sibley, Dan McCauley, Amy Vera, Joe Avallone and Kimberly Stout. We had a lot of fun, thanks to all of them. It was a great blessing for the children and myself to be with all of them, and I think I enjoyed it as much as the children did.

As summer has drawn to a close, an exciting new church school year has begun. We have a great group of church school children who have become friends and have a really good time together as we learn.

This year we will have at least two Family Fun Nights: one in November and one in the early spring. We are looking forward to more young teens moving up into our Youth Group. All Jr. High and High School students and their friends are welcome. We have some new assistant leaders in addition to Betty Carleo and myself that will help plan some great events including some volunteer work in our community and some fun activities. Look for St. Anne’s Kids on Facebook coming soon! On the first night of VBS we talked about the verse from Matthew: “You are the light of the world….” As I looked at their smiling faces in the colored-in picture frames they made at VBS, those words seemed so appropriate. They truly are, and it’s a joy to come to St. Anne’s each Sunday as we learn together about Jesus and what it means to follow Him. I hope that your family can be a part of it each week as we build on these friendships and be a part of this community of families who love and serve God together!
